| Torrent is a P2P network environment used for downloading and uploading large files. It is one of the most popular network environments for files distribution. A torrent refers to a torrent metadata file or several files described by it and contains meta-data about all the downloadable files. Meta-data files aren't stored on the torrent trackers server, but are distributed among many torrent host sites. Each torrent file leads to a trackers site, which centrally manages the PEER-TO-PEER transfer of data among Internet users and keeps track of all the downloaders and givers of the certain file. One host server can supervise simultaneous downloads of several files. Following the link pointing to the torrent meta-file, a user receives from the trackers server a list of peers having a part of the requested file, with whom it is possible to establish a direct connection to barter bits of the file. A file ready for downloading via Torrent is known as a seed. A person who has at their command the completed file and uploads or ‘seeds' it is a Seeder. The more seeders, the better. A leecher is a person who downloads, or leeches, the file from the currently available seeds. As new leechers connect to the network and request the same file, their PC gets a different portion of the data from the seeder. Once several peers have at their command a few pieces of the seed, a source for that portion of the file. Thus, the task gets distributed among the seeder and many peers, which relieves the original user. After the file is downloaded by a given peer, the latter is able to convert into an extra seed, helping the remaining leechers to receive the full file. The nature of Torrent allows to spread files very quickly. For a secure and quick download, choose the torrents with more seeders than leechers, and read comments, if there are any. It will keep you from downloading low quality or infected data. It should be mentioned, however, that torrent sites are less prone to viruses than PEER-TO-PEER programs. It is crucial to let your torrent-downloaded file seed so that you get a ratio of at least 1.0. This ratio means that you have seeded a file in exchange for the downloaded one. Some tracker servers count the quantity of data shared and downloaded by each user, and a bad ratio can be penalised with a bad download speed. Moreover, disconnecting as soon as the file is downloaded violates the idea of cooperation, which is the basic principle of Torrent. |
